What is Bacterial Vaginosis and How to Get Rid of it for Good

Bacterial vaginosis is a condition that can bring about discomfort and pain in the vaginal area. The imbalance of natural bacteria levels is the root cause of bacterial vaginosis. Maintaining a harmonious balance of bacteria is vital for vaginal health. However, an overgrowth of certain bacteria can trigger the onset of bacterial vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis can manifest at any age, but it is most commonly seen during the reproductive years. Changes in hormone levels during this phase create a conducive environment for specific types of bacteria to flourish. Moreover, bacterial vaginosis is prevalent among sexually active individuals, although the exact reasons for this are not entirely clear. Engaging in activities such as unprotected sex and douching can increase the risk of developing BV.

Symptoms associated with bacterial vaginosis may include:

  • Thin vaginal discharge that can have a gray, white, or greenish hue

  • Unpleasant, sometimes "fishy," vaginal odor

  • Vaginal itching

  • Burning sensation during urination

It's worth noting, that many individuals with bacterial vaginosis experience no noticeable symptoms. However, if you encounter any of the symptoms mentioned above, it may be advisable to schedule an appointment with a healthcare professional if:

  • You notice an unusual odor in your vaginal discharge accompanied by discomfort. Consulting your doctor can help identify the underlying cause of your symptoms.

  • You've had previous vaginal infections, but the characteristics of your current discharge differ.

  • You have recently engaged with a new sexual partner or multiple partners. At times, symptoms may indicate a sexually transmitted infection, prompting the necessity for medical assessment and appropriate care.

Some tips to consider

  • If you don’t want to take an antibiotic, try boric acid suppositories: these work well! Try 1-3 doses daily for 1-3 days in a row.

  • Do NOT douche

  • Use condoms with your partners and use the bathroom after intercourse

  • Do not use scented products

Remember, there's no shame in having bacterial vaginosis. If you find yourself dealing with it, know that it's temporary. With proper care and treatment, you can effectively address bacterial vaginosis and restore your vaginal health.
