How do I know what weight loss trends are best for me?

If you’re looking to get into shape or lose some weight, it can be confusing to know which route to go. There are so many weight loss trends and new fads out there, it can be difficult to know what actually works and what doesn’t.

Understanding the different nutritional methods is important so that you can make an educated and informed decision on which method is best for you based on where you’re at in your fitness journey. Recently I shared with you The best weight loss trends (that work!) of 2017; here I simplify the different weight loss trends for you.

Choosing how to pick the best weight loss method, that will work for your body, lifestyle and fitness goals, is a challenge. In this blog I share three tips to keep in mind when selecting a weight loss trend for your body, lifestyle and fitness goals.

What are Your Fitness Goals?

Do you want to lose weight or prepare for a powerlifting or body building competition? Your fitness goals directly affect which “weight loss trend” you should look into.

For example, If you are coming off an extreme training program that required you to significantly drop your calories/macronutrients, you may want to look into Reverse Dieting.

Listen to your body

Some individuals may need to eliminate certain foods due to allergies or sensitivities, so a Gluten Free or Dairy Free diet may work best for you. While other people may choose to eliminate certain foods for religious and ethical reasons the vegetarianism or veganism diet may fit better into your lifestyle. Deciding which method works best for you is not just a matter of physical goals but also mental and emotional health. You have to keep it real with yourself and most importantly pick a method that works for you and your LIFESTYLE.

Can you maintain this “trend” for a lifetime?

It’s important not to go too extreme in your diet, because you most likely will not be able to sustain this extreme approach. You should approach your nutrition with the overall goal of seeking health, balance, and something that you can maintain for a lifetime. It’s corny but I always say you should be focusing on the journey- not the destination! Make it a fun learning experience for you and take the opportunity to learn about your body! You may be surprised to learn some new things about yourself you never knew.

My goal as a personal trainer and lifestyle coach, is to see individuals succeed and achieve health through the body AND mind. Eating according to your lifestyle and needs is the only way to reach your fitness goals and for each individual, that looks very different. It’s important to remember there is no cookie-cut program that works for everyone. Deciding which method will work for and which method will be most sustainable in the long run are important points to consider before deciding to make any changes or advancements towards your fitness goals.
